What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is generally a website address mapped to an IP within the internet. Just like phone number is registered by phone owner and is mapped to a device, website name is registered by the website owner and is mapped to the IP of the computer on the internet.

Domain Name on a blogging platform?
Though, you may be able to find a blog name on free blogging platforms like Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr it may not be possible to get your own domain name yet. For eg: I am creating this blog on Blogger with a blog name Let's Just Blog. I chose one of the available name (letsjustblog-bonjour) and google blogger service is associating my blog posts to the the domain letsjustblog-bonjour.blogspot.com. Now you can access my blogs at the following URL: https://letjustblog-bonjour.blogspot.com/

Choose your own Domain Name?
It is quite easy to buy a domain name, and there are ample of DNS providers, Google Domains being one of them. However, you may need a hosting service as well if you want to run your website on a content management system, like Wordpress. A blog from Jessica Knapp mentions that she is running her website on Hostgator, but I have also heard about Go Daddy, Wix, Wordpress.com etc. You can also provision a VM with one of the cloud providers, AWS EC2 , GCP , Azure , Digital Ocean , and install Wordpress on it but it may be a bit of a complicated setup for beginners. But if you decide to choose your own domain, below is the link that can provide you some tips.

Design, Develop and Build
Another path is to custom develop your site, but it will then be more than just blogging. You will have to choose a development stack, and put lot of efforts in learning it. Some of you may have heard of LAMP stack [Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP] and websites that run on Wordpress usually run on it. Either you should be a PHP developer, or consider growing as a one if you do decide to run on native LAMP stack.
Another popular stack these days is MEAN stack [MongoDB, Express, Angular, NodeJS], and there is huge open source community that backs it. Either you should be a Javascript developer, or consider growing as one if you do decide to run on native MEAN stack.
